As the setting sun
burned the sky
the drums were haunting
in the night.
Sitting in the back
of that rusted pickup
we threaded
through Port-a-Prince
testing out luck
There was no longer importance
in my name.

i still remember the shouts
from the rooftops
raining down
raining
down
on us
wrapped poorly in our western ideals.
& slowly they began to tarnish
there was no longer importance
in my name.

In that bucking truck-bed,
in that charred sky,
in that foreign landscape,
i was haunted
by the drums
by the shouts
by the smells
of desperation,
of possibility,
of a sallow joy.
& the sadness of violence testing the surface.
